The opening keynote of RSA Conference 2023 was worthy of a place on our list of top 5 must-see keynotes of the year. The theme was the double-edged nature of technology, new advances, and how cybersecurity fits into the puzzle.

Taking to the stage was Dr. Hugh Thompson, Program Chair of the RSA Conference and former CTO of Symantec. Dr. Thompson is also a prolific cybersecurity author, having co-authored four of his books and over 100 of his other publications on security.

Abusing AI is an issue on everyone’s minds

Dr. Thompson spoke about the most disruptive dual-use advances in science and technology. He said the first and perhaps most obvious example over the past 50 years was the internet, but the second was his AI.

“The proliferation of AI is (a hot topic),” Dr. Thompson said. “You’ll see that in a number of sessions this week, including AI availability, generative AI availability, and advances in quantum computing. What is it for? How can we prepare for it? ”

Given the security risks posed by AI used unethically, whether intentionally or unintentionally, we must agree. For example, generative AI models trained on large datasets of phishing emails can be used to create new, more convincing phishing emails that are more difficult to detect, or to create fake voices for spear-phishing attacks over the phone. or simply train on known vulnerabilities. Automatically generate code that can exploit them.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. We have only seen a small portion of the problems that this new technology can cause. Now more than ever, cybersecurity professionals need to stay informed and keep an eye on their news feeds.

Interestingly, Dr. Thompson shared that he used ChatGPT to support his research on this issue. He initially consulted several experts, including scientists and engineers, but concluded that a list based on a larger sample size was needed, and created a list of “Top Technology Threats” on ChatGPT. I asked for He highlighted the irony of ChatGPT listing itself as the second-biggest disruptor.

This casual use of generative AI to write a keynote for a major cybersecurity conference speaks volumes, especially for its rapid adoption.

Every light has a shadow and cyber must deal with it

“We are at a special time in history where science and technology are advancing very rapidly,” Dr. Thompson said. “Every time that happens, you get the light of progress and all the good that comes from it, but at the same time it casts a very deep shadow.”

“We are experts in shadows[in the cybersecurity field]. We study shadows, understand shadows, and try to remove shadows. We put other lights in the shadows to remove shadows. Now There has never been a more important time.”

This was a particularly interesting and vivid metaphor, since (like all security threats in the world) you can never really get rid of the shadow.

Continuous learning is important

“This is a career where you are, by definition, a lifelong learner,” he said. “You try to defend, but on the other side there are people (villains) who are just as creative, as smart, as resourceful as we are.”

“So we[as cybersec professionals]have to constantly reinvent what we do and constantly add to what we do.”

Learning is always important for cybersec. Of all the professions in tech, learning is the most like drinking from a firehose. However, it is interesting that Dr. Thompson emphasized the growing importance of learning, given the rapid advances in science and technology, especially his AI.

This is also surprising, given that global organizations rank AI development and training third among “critical technology and human skills to adopt or develop within the next 18 months.” Not. There’s a lot of learning and development to do this year, considering that more than 1,750 leaders and technologists cited cybersecurity as their biggest skill gap, according to Pluralsight’s State of Upskilling 2022.

learn from colleagues

Dr. Thompson spoke about how special events like the RSA conference are. Because it’s an opportunity to get together with other professionals who are experiencing the pains of cybersecurity and share valuable learning experiences.

“We have fellowship here with other people who have to deal with the same challenges that you face every day. It’s important to be able to talk to those people and build connections. .”
