Are you a graphic designer who feels like you’re lacking skills, running out of time in one of the major graphic design programs, or just need a new portfolio? You’re not alone. Over the years, many graphic designers have joined Shillington to upskill and ensure they are well-prepared to apply for design jobs or become freelancers. To show you why Shillington truly is a great place for creators to upskill, we’ve compiled some of the experiences of graduates who have done just that.
We invite people from all over the world who already have graphic design skills or have a graphic design degree before taking our course to show that there is no better place to improve your graphic design skills. We spoke to eight alumni who gathered.
1. Brianne Coglon
Brianne Coglon, who studied through online courses, initially taught herself graphic design before realizing there was a huge gap in her knowledge. She enrolled at Shillington College and she never looked back. She learned more advanced technical skills, gained confidence in the design process, and graduated with an impressive portfolio.
2. Jess Yvette
Jess Yvette, a graduate of Sydney’s Shillington College, wanted to improve her graphic design skills so she could work for herself. Since taking her course, she has carved out her own path as a freelance graphic designer, simultaneously starting a craft brewery with her husband and a creative women’s business with her friend. I did it. This is all thanks to what I learned at the Shillington course.
3. Mason El Hage
Shillington London graduate Mason El Hage had a degree in design and had been working in the industry for three years, but he still felt he needed Shillington’s help. He currently works as a designer at Uncommon Creative Studio.
“At this point, I had been working professionally in the industry for about three years, but I still hadn’t reached the point where I was 100% confident in my process and the way I did things. The next step was to start working in a studio. Or you wanted to move to an agency, but didn’t feel your portfolio was strong enough.
After doing a lot of research on the course and attending graduate presentations, I quickly realized that Shillington emphasizes both aspects of process and completing a well-crafted, industry-standard portfolio. .
Through that time spent at work, it became very clear that there were certain gaps in my knowledge that needed to be addressed. I didn’t learn from others because I wasn’t taught at university, and because I worked as a freelancer and was the only designer on a team. Before moving into a studio environment, I wanted to upskill to have full confidence in my abilities.
Shillington taught me how to think creatively and conceptually. It helped me get rid of years of bad habits and instilled in myself a belief I never had before. ”
4. AJ McLaughlin
Shillington Melbourne Scholarship graduate AJ McLaughlin always had a career goal of working as an art director. He achieved that goal in just six months after he started the course and became his director of art at Cyclone. This course helped AJ integrate all his previous experience and further strengthen his creative thinking and process, and was a huge factor in AJ acquiring his new role.
5. Amrit Maiton
Shillington Online graduate Amrit Mayton had basic design skills due to her background in visual arts, but she needed Shillington’s help. It revolutionized her skill set, increased her efficiency, and furthered her love for design. She currently works as a brand design lead at a creative agency, while also freelancing on the side.
6. Caroline Adams
Caroline Adams tried to teach herself how to design, but realized she only had the basic skills. But what she really wanted was a quick way to learn all the skills she needed and a creative community to support her. She found all of that and more at Shillington and is now pursuing the freelance career of her dreams.
7. Vanessa Rowe
Vanessa Rowe, who was designing museums and galleries in her hometown, knew she needed to improve her skills. Her Shillington course allowed her to expand her creative practice and career opportunities.
“I always had creative ideas, but never had the hard skills to realize them all. I asked about a course. I wanted something more comprehensive than a short course. However, I didn’t have the time or energy to pursue a completely new college degree. Luckily, a few friends recommended Shillington to me.
I was working on exhibitions and management at the Australian Museum, while also doing freelance photography and writing on the side. I really wanted to learn new skills that would broaden my creative practice and allow me the possibility of working in different industries (I know that almost every industry and niche has something to do with design). I love being able to benefit from visual communication). The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Studying design will open up more avenues for me.
This course taught me the theoretical background, design thinking, and difficult skills needed to become a well-rounded designer. In addition to learning how to use design programs like Adobe Creative Cloud, I really appreciated the opportunity to learn about research, developing ideas, and communicating with others. ”
8. Kelly O’Connell
Kelly O’Connell picked up the skill of graphic design while working in digital marketing and fell in love with it. But without Shillington she wouldn’t have gotten to where she is now. While studying with us, she fine-tuned her techniques and gained the skills she needed to work full-time as a graphic designer.
