IBM has launched watsonx code assistant targeting multiple use cases such as IT automation and application modernization. At the time of launch, this product consists of two main components: watsonx code assistant for Red Hat Ansible Lightspeed and watsonx code assistant for Z.
Watsonx Code Assistant for Red Hat Ansible Lightspeed uses generative AI to assist IT teams with tasks such as network configuration and code deployment. Watsonx Code Assistant for Z uses technology to help modernize your mainframe applications and can convert your applications from his COBOL to Java.

Watsonx Code Assistant for Z helps with application discovery, business service refactoring, and code transformation. In the future, we plan to add automated validation tests to the tool.
IBM explained that the goal here is not to completely turn all COBOL applications into Java applications, but rather to enable a world where the two are used in optimal combination.
“Simply put, each language has its own strengths, and clients should have full control over which language to use to meet their business needs. It supports feature interoperability and optimization, and allows you to leverage existing application investments,” said Kyle Charlet, IBM Fellow and CTO of Z Software at IBM. post.
The company is looking at ways to extend this tool to other programming languages in the future.
Watsonx Code Assistant is granite basic model, an IBM proprietary model. IBM is exploring new opportunities to train models to incorporate domain-specific knowledge so that generative AI capabilities can be extended to more areas such as code generation and code explanation.
