During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate Henry Ruiz, Machine Learning GDE, and the voices of Latin American and Hispanic developers.

Machine Learning GDE Henry Ruiz originally dreamed of becoming a soccer player in his native Colombia, but when his brother got injured, he knew he had to come up with a backup plan. Video He loved games, Henry decided to get an education in computer development and eventually he discovered the world of science.

Currently, Henry is a computer scientist working as a research specialist (data scientist) at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and pursuing a Ph.D. He received his PhD in Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Henry spoke little English before immigrating to the United States, but thanks to support from the Hispanic community, he is now preparing to defend his Ph.D.

As a first-generation college student in the United States, Henry was looking for a community where he felt connected. He said he received a lot of support from his international students and always received a warm welcome, especially from the Hispanic community. Participating in various clubs on campus, Henry connected with others through shared meals and experiences, and formed study groups that served as a support system for each other. Through these connections, he began to notice the influence of Latin American developers and was deeply inspired. Henry recalls: “We are considered a minority and are not always given the same opportunities as developed countries. Therefore, we need to be creative and make special efforts. Seeing the stories of minority developers making an impact means so much to me.” Henry sees Hispanic Heritage Month as a celebration of the accomplishments of Hispanic people. That’s what drives his work.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of the hard work, resilience and hard work of people in our communities.”

Henry has seen progress in recognizing the contributions of Hispanics in the technology industry. “Large companies are aware of the challenges we have as a minority and have started creating different programs to get more community members involved in technology companies,” he explains. Famous companies host conferences for the Hispanic community, and Google in particular offers scholarships such as his Generation Google Scholarship. This makes him feel seen and increases the community’s visibility within the industry. When he sees Hispanics in leadership positions, he sees what can be accomplished, and that drives his work.

Currently, Henry works on generative AI projects, leveraging Google technologies (Cloud, TensorFlow, Kubernetes) to address challenges in the agriculture industry. Specifically, he is working on a project where he detects diseases and pests in bananas. With a strong community base, Henry actively supports the community with research. As for advice for the Hispanic community, Henry shares these words of wisdom: Just keep moving forward. ”

Henry can be found on LinkedIn, GitHub, and his GDE developer profile.
