Debbie talks to TED founder Richard Saul Wurman about learning and teaching. “You have a learning system, but no teaching system. You have a teaching system, but no learning system. Teaching is top-down and learning is bottom-up.”

Yes, Debbie…why not ask a “good” question? Hahaha

“That’s bullshit” – Debbie. I can’t believe Debbie has to give a lecture on self-esteem. I understand where Richard is coming from. He is somewhat dissatisfied with what he has achieved so far. As far as I can tell, there is a huge gap between what he wants to be and what he is now. And asking questions about his past will only remind him of this dilemma. While I commend Richard for holding himself to such high standards, I wish he had been more considerate with his podcast.

That was a little disappointing. I thought he was going to demonstrate his attitude about avoiding Debbie’s questions. His definition of a good question is one that leads to something, and Debbie’s previous question was just like that.

This is a very interesting episode. For your comments on whether your question is provocative or a good question. i disagree. That’s Richard’s view. He probably hasn’t heard much from you on this podcast, but he was very insightful in terms of analysis and discussion of the questions, and hopefully helpful to all listeners. Debbie, thank you for bringing all kinds of discussions to the table! Cheers, CRCM.

You are so eloquent! Just hearing about this situation makes me uncomfortable. I considered changing it to something more enjoyable, but decided to follow his advice and endure the discomfort to hear his opinion. Your calm response is wonderful.

oh! This makes me nervous. What a difficult person to interview. You were very shrewd in dealing with his unforgiving attitude.

“You don’t have to say ‘personal'” – The problem with verbal abuse is that the aggression is often very subtle. Any attempt to silence someone is an act of violence, and this part of the interview is a clear example of that. I noticed that he used profanity several times during the interview. Richard clearly has interesting and challenging ideas, but unfortunately he can’t seem to bring these ideas to light without becoming offensive. Debbie handled it with grace.
